![]() ![]() That's alright, I started played video games in the mid-1990s and I still can use my imagination to fill in the blanks.Īs for the story. ![]() Unfortunately, the developers didn't do any performance capture for faces, so characters always have flat expressions and usually no mouth movements. The characters were motion captured and interacted with the environment in a very nice way. I didn't like or respect a single one of them, but they were all very well acted and successfully carried the game for me. These characters are a collection of the varieties of young degenerates produced by modern society. In Eternal Threads, 98% of the game is following the activities of housemates in the UK who are thoroughly contemporary and completely ordinary. General characterizations will rule this day!ĭespite the apparent sci-fi stylings of this game's initial presentation (the title screen, while very cool, is misleading about the nature of the game), it's like the Assassin's Creed games where there's a layer of "real world" on top of the historic events that are the main setting of the game. But we all know that would be a wasted effort, so even though I took notes on these topics, I'll avoid doing that. Story & charactersI could write a detailed essay on what I thought about the story & characters of Eternal Threads. The story and characters of the people that lived in this house is the main (and only) attraction. It really is like watching a TV show or a very long movie. I think the basic systems of Eternal Threads could have had supported robust puzzle gameplay, but it doesn't have any. Again, I think "choose-your-own-adventure" is a better way to describe the interactivity in Eternal Threads than "time manipulation." I was always a spectator, separated from any actual events. There were precious few instances when decisions I made about the timeline actually affected the "real world" in any way. The player in Eternal Threads is alone in an abandoned house. It's not like most time travel stories where character actually goes back and directly interacts with the world of the past. They applied to the holographic scenes I was viewing and to the user interface for the timeline. It didn't really feel like I was manipulating time in Eternal Threads, because almost all of the effects were abstract. This is the so-called "time manipulation." The only game mechanics are choosing historic scenes to view with a hologram projector and some of the scenes let you choose between two outcomes. This game has the structure of a Choose-Your-Own-Adventure® book. The entire game takes place in a house with around 20 rooms/areas. The game is about these six characters from the past, not your player character. GameplayThe point of the game is to view the story, not to interact with game mechanics or explore environments. I'm hoping the next one is a setting that's a little bit more important/life or death with regards to the stakes! I'd be a fun escalation from this one! I'm really hoping to see something else from this developer! The game has a good template that can be dropped onto other stories and circumstances to great success I feel. It got a fair amount of giggles out of me how they acted.Īnd.that's kinda it. This is not an objective point but I also enjoyed the main character, he (or she) is a silent protagonist but they've got a fair amount of personality with how they title each of the cutscenes sometimes even joking around with a life or death scene for the victims but what must be fairly mundane for a time traveling fixer. The character models could have maybe used some love in this regard showing bruises or marks from previous days. The environment, by contrast, is very well detailed and if you pay attention minute things shift around depending on how you've changed the timeline such as a window being broken and a hammer being brought up to repair it without the story ever drawing attention to such little details, it helps make the world feel alive and like your choices are really changing things. ![]() But what few there were I really enjoyed.īeyond that, the character models could have been better. I do have a few complaints, it doesn't use the 'items getting moved or generated as a result of your interference' gimmick to its fullest, there's maybe 4 or 5 puzzles tops that go beyond a scene that just shows you a hidden area you couldn't touch until you saw it in a cutscene. I would say however it's probably not worth 30 dollars, I'd suggest 20 or 15, so wait for it to go on sale. ![]() It's nothing terribly ground-breaking but it's a solid, well-written piece of media that I enjoyed. Very solid game! Highly recommended if you enjoy games featuring time travel or choices impacting the direction of the story. ![]()
